    '56 Oil Pan

How can identify the correct oil pan for my '56? Also how much oil is it supposed to hold? 4 qts + 1 for the filter or 5 qts + 1 for4 the filter?

    Thanks for your help.

      Re: '56 Oil Pan

Greg, The '56's had two styles of oil pan, early engine pan had the dip stick tube riveted to the side. Later and more common style did not. The later style held 5 qts in the pan and 1 qt in the oil filter canister. The pan had three levels. Lowest level contained the drain hole centered on bottom towards the back edge radius. If the pan had the original drain plug, the head of the bolt markings would have an "A" inside a circle. On both pan sides there are two vertical rounded gullies, one long and one short. Inside, there is a short baffle welded to the second level extending over the third level. Regards.

Didn't the 56 pan have a trap door for solid lifter applications?

          Varooom.
