    Trip Odometer Reset - '64

Has anyone experienced a problem with the trip odometer reset not working because the cable appears to be binding or otherwise malfunctioning? The reset knob would not turn so the panel was pulled to check/repair the trip odometer then lo and behold, with the panel sitting on the bench the reset worked easily by turning the cable end. Thanks.
    Best regards,
    Charlie

Yes, Charlie...common problem. Happens as a result of disuse of the feature/function. Plus, it CAN have serious consequences!

The cable is spring loaded to effect reset return. If the cable is 'sticky' due to disuse, the cable can 'hang' and not fully return the tripometer drive gear to its fully meshed position causing gear teeth to clash and shear.

Remove the reset cable. Use brake cleaner to fully flush the old dried lubricant and air dry. Now, use the cable lube of your choice (auto parts store, some are graphite based...) and thoroughly work the new lube into the reset cable making sure you both spin the cable as well as exercise it in/out.

When everything is working crisp and clean, re-install the cable and drive on with a smile of confidence. BUT, don't forget to periodically 'exercise' the reset function to keep the cable lubricant coating actively spread instead of 'puddling'....

Make sure the trip odometer cable is routed through the hole in the dash support in the middle of the picture, so it doesn't kink. PT
