    Re: Advance weights distributor C3

Good work Charles, you lubrication of the mechanical advance reminded me of my 64 Corvette I once had. After driving the 64 getting it up to operating temperture it just was not runing right. I am still learning today as back then in 1968, however I did not know what was wrong. Took it to a mechanic and he tested and could not find it. The car was great til getting up to operating temp. I did discover the problem one day, the mechanical advance had enough rust contamination on the pivit points and weights that the mechanical advance would not retact all the time. Cleaned it up like yours and it was fine. Have always made the cleaning and lubrication a step in the tune up of my cars since that discovery. If your tack is working and you want it to continue remove the tack cable connection from the distributor. Using a good flat steel putty knife in the wide slot in the distributor cable attaching brass piece remove the tack rear and clean and lubricate it. Maint/lubrication is sure cheaper than replacing the distributor shaft and tack drive gear. The cavity at the top of an original distributor is probably lacking any lubricant after many years of use. What you most likely will find is dried out crud, that is another project that requires removal of the distributor although it is not that difficult after you do it once.
