Duntov award

I just purchased a car that scored 97.5 at a regional NCRS meet in October 2006 with the prior owner. I am interested in trying to achieve a Duntov award with the car and understand the rules as described, but am not clear if I can use the 97.5 score from the Regional meet with the prior owner, or if I have to in essence start all over again as the new owner. I plan to take the car to the NJ Regional in May. Any light that can be shed on how this works is much appreciated.

Hi John:

I don't have the Judging Manual handy, but I am almost certain that the rules state that all three of the elements for Duntov have to be achieved by the same owner. The nice thing is that you have a car that is already a contender, so if you can get the judging sheets you should be able to determine what improvements you can make to increase the rather thin margin over 97% that the car had last time out.

Also, don't forget that driving points don't count for Duntov, so if the 97.5% included driving points, you need to back them out of the score.

Wow! You guys are quick.
Thanks for the insight, Sounds like I'll probably have to start the ball rolling on my own. The prior 97.5% was without driving points & I do have the judging sheets. Most of the issues have already been taken care of but I will give it a further going over.

John, as stated, all three elements, a Regional judging with 97% raw score, then pass a Performance Verification, and then score 97% again at the National Convention. The car has be be in possession of one owner during this period. No awards by the previous owner(s) count toward this. This is supposed to be done within three or less calendar years. It is possible to do it in less that 6 months if one is so inclined to punish himself that much

John, I have been through the duntov process. I can tell you the whole thing can be alot of fun and rewarding. I can only assume you live in the East if your coming to our N.J. Regional. Since you have 3 years to complete all elements and the National is in the East this year - if you think you can't get all 3 done in the next 4 months [which is real tight] start looking at location sites to try to reduce your travel time and expences. Clarification....

The MoE (Mark of Excellence) award does NOT require an order to the prerequisites (Regional 97% Flight Award then pass a PV). The rules state the prerequisites may be achieved in any order.

Most do as Dick suggested, get the Flight score first then attempt PV... But, when I was chapter judging chairman, I advised folks to go in the reverse order.

Get the car judged at a chapter meet so it can attend a Regional/National. Now, focus exclusively on achiving the PV because that's where you're going to put the car on the road and potentially suffer wear/tear.

Now, once you've got the PV, fix whatever damage may have occured and go back to get that 97% or better Flight score. In fact, you'd best shoot for a 98% or better score just so you know you've got some 'cushion' for that final judging at the National Convention to obtain the MoE Award...

I believe at one time you had to have at least a third flight judged score to qualify for a PV, but that may have changed over the years.

Still the same Clup, 3rd flight or better to qualify for a PV.
