1963 VIN tag spot weld(s)

The crossmember to which the VIN tag is spot welded seems to have grind marks under the spot welds.On one car the marks are horizontal (a coupe). The other marks are vertical(a convertible).
Is this typical or is it a coinciderce?

Common. They would grind off a bit to get to clean metal so the spot welds would hold.

i'd suspect that the horizontal vs vertical orientation was specific to the particular employee doing the grinding on any given day back then. regards, mike
