I just finished rebuilding the engine in my 65 roadster (327/300), got it all back together, and when I fired it up, there was a strange vibration at idle and higher rpms. When I put it in drive, with my foot on the brake, as the rpms decreased, so did the vibrations. The harmonic balancer is in good condition, all the pulleys and belts are in proper alignment, and the torque converter was bolted to the flex plate in the same position as original. The only thing I can think of is the fan clutch. I did notice some fluid on the shaft and there is a "very small" amount of play or "wobble" in the fan. Is it possible that this is causing the "very noticable" vibration??? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

It's possible, but not very likely. To test this theory is simple, though. Remove the fan and fan clutch and temporarily bolt the pulley directly to the water pump. Then, start the engine and check for the vibration. You won't want to run the engine for very long like this, but it shouldn't take you very long to see if the problem persists. If you start from a cold engine, you'll have several minutes, at least, that you'll be able to run the engine before any overheating begins. And, it shouldn't take you anywhere near that long to perform this test.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Strange Vibrations.....
The engine ran perfectly prior to the rebuild, with the exception of a spun main bearing. All I did was have the crank turned (10/10), and reassemble. I did not have it balanced. Everything was carefully marked and reassembled in the same position as original. No new parts were used (except of course bearings & gaskets). The only thing different about the engine is that the crank was shaved 10/10. In reference to Wayne's post, I did re-check the plug wires before firing it up, but it was late, so I'll re-re-check them today. I will also try pulling the fan this afternoon to check out Joe's theory. I'll keep you all advised. Thanks for the replies,.... ANY ideas are welcome!- Top
