I have a NOS set of static collectors and I need a detailed description on how they are to be installed. There are two pieces per wheel. Both have "buttons" on their ends. Are the buttons supposed to touch or make contact with each other? Plus, when I try to install them "assuming the buttons of the two pieces are supposed to touch....I can't get the wheel bearing dust covers to go back on because of such a tight fit. If you buy reproduction static collectors, you only get two pieces total...one for each wheel. Thanks

Re: C1 Wheel Static Collectors
The kit was likely for another GM application, and the larger of the two sizes also works for the Corvette application.
FWIW--the reproductions are all identical--originals were left and right, depending on which direction the coil is "wound".
The static collectors go inside the grease cap, with the button contacting the tip of the spindle. Obviously, surfaces need to be grease-free.- Top

Re: C1 Wheel Static Collectors
none of our c-1's(7 total all acquired in the late 60's and early 70's) had the static collectors and all but one were radio equipped. however, our 49 chevy coupe, 50 chevy convert and 51 chevy woodie all have the collectors.have had the 49 since 61 and the other two were mid-60 aquisitions. mike- Top

Static collectors were often...
discarded by mechanics doing wheel bearing re-pack jobs. They're there to thwart static build up in the tires that periodically discharges to the frame through the suspension creating 'snapping' noise in the radio. But, you'll only notice this when two things happen:
(1) You're listening to radio under 'fringe' reception conditions.
(2) You're running factory original, non-DOT, tires.
Today's rubber composition has changed dramatically obviating the need for static collectors. That's why they haven't been used in YEARS!
Also, there were cases where even cars equipped with the static collectors prompted owner complaint. For those cases, GM had a 'hip pocket' solution -- anti-static dust. The dust was installed inside the tire an promoted electric charge migration. Aren't we glad tire technology has improved over time!- Top

They weren't SUPPOSED to be installed on non-radio cars, but the guys on the Chassis Line that installed them usually just put them on every car instead of checking the broadcast to see if the car had a radio or not.
Trivia - On the Corvair, EVERY car got one on the left front, radio or not, as it had a square hole in the center that drove the speedo cable which was inserted from the back side through a hole drilled all the way through the spindle- Top
