I recently purchased a Sunfire Yellow, White interior 427/390 with good documentation, but no tank sticker. The previous owner restored the interior, paint, and most of the undercarriage back to original specs. Rear end is original. He did a good job. It currently runs a 1971 454 and 1971 4 speed. Before I undertake restoring the engine and tranny, I want to make sure how it may be judged. I am going to search for a correct block (yeah, I know, good luck) heads, carb, intake, tranny, etc... with date codes as close to what would be considered "correct" per the NCRS Judging manual. Will NCRS deduct points since it will not be the original motor/trans? Do I have to re-stamp the engine/trans so it appears original? I would disclose that it is not the original motor/trans, how will NCRS judge that. Any idea on how many points the judges will deduct if the date codes are after the assembly date or to far before the Feb. 1, 1967 engine assembly date per the protect o plate I have? The engine code on the protect o plate and body build date are 12 days from each other. Thanks for your input

The judges look to see if parts appear the way they would on an original 67. You need to make your replacement engine with this in mind. If you use a restamper find out who does the best job. Any part that is not correct will get a deduction and buying parts will take some time. Drive and enjoy your ride and build an engine and transmission as you find the parts.

Re: Judging a NOM 1967 Coupe
Brian,
I appreciate your candor in this touchy subject. If you can find a 3904351 casting block with a casting date of Aug 12, 1966 or later (assuming your car has a build date of Feb 12 1967), you will get at most an 88 pt deduction for the engine. If you can find block that has not been decked and has the correct engine for your car (probably an IL suffix), you might only loose 25 pts for the VIN deriviative.
The breakdown is 38 pts for the pad surface/broach marks, 25 pts for the assembly date and suffix, 25 pts for the VIN.
If it were me I'd find the correct block and not even try restamping. To me that always casts the rest of the car in a suspicious light.
Good luck.

Re: Judging a NOM 1967 Coupe
Thanks for the great help. You guys are awesome. One other question. Where can I find a book on how many points are deducted for incorrect parts. Does one incorrect bolt marking have the same deduction as an incorrect tranny? I assume not, so is there a book that breaks down the points? I will also post this as a new topic.- Top
