    Welding cast aluminum

Got a weird request here, so please bear with me. I have a cast aluminum big block oil pan for a generation 6 block. I want to fit this to a generation 4 block. The obvious difference is that the ends of the pan that seal to the timing cover and rear main seal are larger than the gen 4 pan. Does anyone know of a competent machine shop who could weld up these ends and then turn them back to the gen 4 block specs? I would prefer a shop within a couple of hundred miles of Kentucky, but will go wherever necessary. Thanks in advance for your help. Rex

    Re: Welding cast aluminum

As it turns out, I am actually trying to "retor-fit" a gen 6 cast alum oil pan to a gen 4 (new ZL-1) big block. Is it even possible?
    Thanks,
    Rex

I would not even consider trying to modify a Gen V or Gen VI pan for Mark IV use; TOTALLY out-of-the-question, in my opinion. Besides, you should be able to find a cast aluminum oil pan specifically configured for a Mark IV engine.

        Rex,

John Barry in Tulsa does a lot of welding and machining on cast aluminum blocks and heads. He has lots of experience at it but I don't know if he has ever tried to do this. You can call him at 918-836-111 and talk about it.

        Good luck,

        Verle

          bolt pattern is wrong

The bolt pattern where the block bolts to the pan rail is wrong. I had to cut the pan rail from a gen 6 pan and weld a Corvette Mk 4 bottom to it to get my 502 block into my C3.
