There is no part number and no date on backing or glass. There are two style mirrors for 1972. The 1971 style with stainless steel back was used to around December when it changed to a black grained back. I can't identify the weird dude, but there is an old woman in mine.

I thought the gray day night knob was just faded from the sun.

According to the new JG all 70-72 had a light gray day/night knob.....that's what my 71 has.

The manual may be correct but when the change was made from the chrome to the black mirror I think in late 72 did the black mirror have a gray knob? I have seen the black mirrors with a black knob but they may be GM over the counter or repops.

I agree that on the black mirrors some show a gray knob and I'm sure you have one. What I'm not sure of is did they start out black and the sun washed them out to gray. As an example if you look at the plastic roller controls on the heater control they show a gray color many times on one side that was the side in the sun. If you roll them to the bottom that was in the dark they are black. Joe do you have a black 72-73 NOS mirror in you stock?

this car is at the very end of production of 72 331 more were made after mine.Is the 1973 mirror the same.I have to get my kid to put the photos up for me,But very black day and night knob shows no gray age, only on the silver part. This part was taken off the car in 1987 put in news paper "date on paper"Than put into box than put into back seat of car when I bought it.Also in a box original water pump no hole in top by pass!1 T3 head light, master brake,Exhaust chrome parts, corvette news books and other small thing taken off car.Do I think this is off the car Yes But I'm not a pro.Photos will tell all.

                    Black vs. Grey

The native plastic of the knob is grey. Going back to early mid-year cars, the grey plastic was painted black and with time/use the paint fades away. When the 'Ralph Nader' version of the mirror made its debut in '67 (grey safety rubber surround), the knob changed shape (from 'tear drop' to 'L') and they stopped painting the knob to color coordinate it to the rubber surround.

If you really want to know if your mirror's knob was originally painted, take a flashlight and look up, inside, the housing where the upper shaft of the knob is crimped to the tilt actuator. If it was originally painted, you'll see the original paint nicely protected from sun + human touch as it was when it was originally assembled...

                      Re: Black vs. Grey

so all knobs were painted black? And faided ones would be Gray from touch and sun. I still like the manual gray, but mine is black no ware marks just nice black the whole thing is black. can I take the knob off?

                        Re: Black vs. Grey

Read my post again... The plastic material was always grey. Some were painted black and others left natural grey plastic depending on when built.

Can you take your knob off? Yes, but you have to TOTALLY disassemble the mirror to de-crimp the tilt actuator that holds the knob shaft in place.

BTW, why would you want to take the knob off? If it's simply a matter of the original black paint having faded/peeled, it's child's play to tape mask the lower edge of the mirror and shoot fresh vinyl plastic paint onto the tilt actuator knob...
