What and where is the best complete reference for how to remove old paint and refinish the stripped surface in preparation for a professional paint job? I have a '59 with most of the surface covered by failing original paint.

    Re: paint

Greg, I recently had the paint stripped off of my 1959 Corvette using plastic media blasting. I believe these facilities are located around the country, and typically cater to the aircraft and auto restoration market. The process removes absolutely 100% of the paint inside and outside of the car and did not damage the fiberglass. Additionally the process does not damage the cad plating on metal surfaces that cannot be removed before the process (i.e. the trunk hinge assembly and the exposed braces underneath the dashboard). Lastly the process was very fast, the body was ready to pick up the day after it was dropped off.

Media blasting is supposed to be great. Watch out who does it, though. On the back cover of the Winter 1999 Paragon catalog just received is the story of a '66 coupe whose front clip was wrecked by dirt in the blasting media which shot holes through some weak spots in the glass. The story has a happy ending many dollars later.
