    starter #1108430 for a 71

according to the ncrs judging manual the 430 starter is for an auto and should have an aluminum nose cone. My 430 is an iron nose and in my 71 LS 5 4spd( should be a 400). What is wrong and when i get it rebuilt, what is the difference. It is dated Sept 25, 1973(yes i know it is wrong for my car, just like everything else) The numbers off my starter are very easy to read(no mistake I put on my glasses)

    Jeff,

I have always wondered if those mechanical judges get way down under those low shark cars to check those starter numbers.

Anyway, I am not sure how much can be done with a rebuild to make a starter correct and numbers matching. If it functions OK, but the numbers thing bothers you, you may be in the market for a used 1108400 starter core with date near, but before, your engine build date. Some on NDB have highly recommended John Pirkle, but I have never had any work done by John. He may be able to supply you a starter already rebuilt with the correct numbers and appropriate date. Maybe somebody will tune in here with his address/phone number.

      Jeff-----

The part number on Delco Remy starters is stamped on the main case of the starter. It designates the configuration of the starter as it was ORIGINALLY manufactured. Afterwards, the starter can be easily reconfigured by using any particular main case with any number of other different components. The starter nose is one of these easily changed components. The aluminum starter nose for cars with 12-3/4", 153 tooth flywheels and flexplates is GM #1968122. The cast iron starter nose for cars with 14", 168 tooth flywheels was GM #1984098. These can be easily interchanged.

        Jeff,

Did a search, and if you are interested, John Pirkle's telephone number is 706-860-9047.

You can bet that all mech.1 judges get down on those starter numbers and dates. Theyare not at all hard to see, the really hard ones are the horn dates!
