I wanted to pass along an inexpensive, quick solution to fix an inoperative door alarm switch (and perhaps many other switches as well). The switch in question is the one mounted on the fender on most C3's. Although replacement switches are readily available and work and fit well, they come with their own unique key and rekeying a replacement switch is impractical. Since the original switch cannot be disassembled without destroying it, I decided to see if the contacts could be chemically cleaned. Switch contact cleaner that I got at Radio Shack was only partially effective resulting in a switch that worked intermittently. I read that a solution of two parts white vinegar to one part hydrogen peroxide would clean brass. I tried it out on an old brass bolt and it worked well. So I put the switch contact end down into a small glass jar, poured in the solution and let it sit for 10-15 minutes, removed the switch, washed it with water and blew it dry and the switch worked perfectly again. The solution did not attack the switch housing nor the stainless steel bezel.
