1967 frame stencil paint, sprayed or rolled?

At the recent Boston Regional I got a deduction because my car's frame stencil was sprayed on instead of rolled on. I had used the Quanta kit for my stencil, so I used the spray paint included with the kit.

Is it true that original stencils were applied with a roller? It's easy enough for me to fix this, but I don't want the next judge to tell me the stencil should have been sprayed instead of rolled.

Man, those 67 judges are, er, tough...how could he even see it?

But, yes, the judge is right and Quanta is wrong; frame stencils were ROLLED...even on 67s! I found a tiny little disposable tray/roller combo that will work perfectly; you need a really short nap on the roller, say 1/8" or less. DO NOT load up the roller for the first pass...start out with as little paint on the roller as you can get until you get a feel for what it's going to take to fill the stencil without excess. Otherwise, the excess will run down under the stencil, and it will look, ummmm, more than original.

Can you fix this on a 67 without raising the body off the chassis?

Chuck. Yes, just remove the rocker moulding. It's no big deal. Tony

Interesting! I was looking at the smog system on that car. I have part of the smog system off a corvette like that. Is that 67?? Terry

            Terry,

            Yes - it is a 67.

Do not have the answer. New clutch, radial tires, new u-joints, and a small block car. Fortunately, it happened at a low speed around 35mph shifting from first to second. It could have been a lot worse.

Gosh, ungly half shaft break on the photobucket. I am deathly afraid of the same thing happening singe I just replaced my battery box from where a previous owner had the same thing happen.

Were the caps still in the halfshaft yoke? The lack of damage on the u-joint looks like the caps came off and the halfshaft flung itself off the u-joint when you went off power during the shift.

You have to be careful installing the keepers as they don't always get in the groove. The cap has to be BELOW the ring groove, not just even when installing the keepers.

I always take a Dremel circular saw blade and clean the groove out, as rust tends to collect and not let the keeper seat properly.

                        Chuck,

When the stencil was rolled, was the frame right side up or unside down? The reason for asking is just in case tthere are drips or dribbles, which way should they go on a finished car? Up? Or down?

The frames were stacked upside-down (with removable spacers between them) when they were stenciled, and remained that way during shipment and while being stored and unloaded onto the Frame Line in the plant.

                            Frame stencil paint drips

                            John,

Thanks for the orientation answer. So are drips from the stencil paint seen going up vertically on finished cars?

John, were the frames painted/dipped (black) before they were shipped? Bob
