Re: Costs when shipping to Canada

I live in Ontario. I ordered a Ralley Wheel cap from from Corvette America last year for $65 plus whatever they charged for shipping (around $10). UPS shows up and between brokerage, taxes and duty they wanted another $50 at the door. Seems a little out of whack when the shipping costs as much as the item being purchased.

I now have a US po box.

Has anyone ever been charged with a crime that you know of for selling a part on Ebay for $400 then saying it is a gift and declaring the amount it is worth $20. I feel with payment by paypal a sale through ebay it would not be smart for the US seller to lie on the form as their is an easy paper trail and is not really the sellers problem but a false statment on a form may cost the seller money.

        Scott,
I can top that one. My first and last experience with a certain US autoparts house.

        Fuel filter $35.99(US)
        AN to SAE connector 14.99

        Sub-Total 50.98

        Package/Handling 10.99
        Shipping 10.75
        International Fee 19.07
        (to Canada)

        Total 91.79(US)

        Add:
-FedEx brokerage fee, PST and GST at 14% (I am billed at a later date).

The package was less than one lb.

Many companies will not ship by US Mail. They cite high loss rates.

I haven't been able to find any companies that will ship USPS to Canada.

For anyone living in the Montreal area.
For years I have been dealing with a forwarder located at the border on the NY side in Champlain. They charge $2 US a box, and will hold the package for a couple of weeks until you can go pick it up.
I have all my parts sent there, and then just drive down and hand carry through customs. This way I only pay the 15% (arg!) sales tax (if over about $50) and the seller never has any issues or extra fees, because they are shipping to NY.
You can also ship-out from their location, and you get the benefit of their volume on the carrier rates. I sent a carefully boxed (read big) steering wheel to NJ, it was $7 UPS ground insured.

Corvette Central is "authorized" to collect candian taxes and therefore you avoid the costly brokerage fees when ordering smaller valued parts.. you do still pay the tax and delivery but not the 40$ per whack brokerage fees...

I have been happy (so far) with thier service and prices seem comparable to others ... I have also had luck with some vendors like paragon who will use USPS...

                    my 2 cents
