    C2:67 Alternator Brace-Resolved

Thanks to John McRae and others, I've got my alternator brace figured out. Here's John's picture below:

The picture confirms the 13 3/4" out to out dimension which I have on my original. (BTW John-My type of shoes )

Here's a picture of my 67 original brace 327 base engine no A/C:

The slot length is about 3 5/8"

Here's the resolution of the problem I had with a replacement in the post last week:

Per the AIM, the P/N of the correct brace for a base engine is 3884640 with belt 3847710. This belt is 53.25" long.

With C60 on the same engine the brace is P/N 3854028 with belt 3798498. This belt is 57.5" long.

Intuitively, the brace for a C60 car would have to be longer then the non-AC car although the difference in pulleys might accomodate some of the extra length.

The Paragon 1779K brace has a P/N of 3882182 and is listed for 66-74 small blocks (327 or 350) for all applications. One would assume that this is a later replacement part which was intended for both A/C and non A/C cars. As I found, the brace is much longer than my original and the slot is also much longer. Here's what the 1779K looks like on a non-AC 67/327:

So it looks like I'm going back to my original brace, refurbed of course.
Funny that I couldn't find a repro of my original brace, must be rare. Probably sell on ebay for $1000 or more

    Jerry,

I see in this post and one the other day that you have a shield taped to the upper hose to protect it from belt damage. I've heard of this happening but haven't experienced the problem myself. I've watched the belt/hose relationship on my L-79 when running and revving the engine and don't see a clearance problem. Does it become a problem only if the belt breaks?

      Wayne,

The tape on the upper radiator hose in that other picture was only there to temporarily attach a meat thermometer to the hose. Had I pulled out in the picture you would have seen the thermometer.

I used the meat thermometer to check my temp gage and various senders. I put in a new repro gage, and and they are pretty sensitive to the correct calibration of the sender. I have a collection of three or four senders, and after experimenting I found the right one.

I haven't had a problem with the correct upper hose and the belt, although the clearance of about 1" is pretty minimal.

      Regards,
