Just used the "Roy Braatz method" and uncovered the original wax pencil marking behind my division board in the trunk to identify the original color of my '58. However, after being unsuccessful rubbing the quarter over the paint, I sprayed some Capt. Lee's stripper over the suspected area, and 10 minutes later I had the green letters staring me in the face. After falling in love with the charcoal and getting ready to strip and repaint, I now need to switch gears and think about the white instead. Either one is fine, but I'm leaning toward returning the car to its original color. Hopefully you can read the I V O, however the R and Y are more pronounced.

Re: Uncovered hidden exterior color in trunk
That is great that you found the marking and took a nice picture of it. Be sure to get a shot of it from farther back so you can prove it's from your car.
I had my trunk repainted and even though I knew where to find the marking, I forgot to go over to the painter and snap a shot of it! Doh!
He told me it had said IVORY, which I was pretty confident of anyway, but it still would have been nice to get a picture.
The painter had himself taken some photos of the work, but his digital camera card got messed up and he couldn't get any pictures off the camera. I borrowed the card and took it to a computer place to try to fix it. Paid $150 and they did manage to restore a bunch of the photos, but sadly there were none of the trunk in that area. Darn.
Now I'm left wondering if I should scratch off my new paint just to get a picture of the marking.

Holy crap!
Pardon my language, but I was working on posting a picture of my new red trunk for Roy (I was gonna ask him if he really wanted me to scratch up such a beautiful thing) when I found some pictures I didn't realize I had.
There it is baby! Whoo yahhh!

Re: Holy crap!"Dave"
Is there any such marking besides the aformentioned front subframe chalk on the '57 body to determine the original color? I have my car apart and I believe it was originally white with a beige interior which was a very rare combination for that year. It's not my choice of colors but based upon overspray evidence and obvious interior colors the car seems to support the combination. Any additional info that could help confirm the original would be helpful before the vehicle goes for paint.- Top

"Isn't nice to know what your Corvette color really was and can prove it?? Over the many years Noland and I must have worn out many quarters showing people what color came on their Corvette."
Can't this be easily faked to suit the color you want? It might take some work to get the old grease marking off, but then you could just make your own marking in whatever color you choose.

Re: Uncovered hidden exterior color in trunk
I've got a 59 Snowcrest White car, with the Ivory trunk code as well. I'm no handwriting expert, but to me, the handwriting looks like it is from the same guy who wrote the Ivory on the two cars shown in this post. Maybe there was one guy who worked the crayon for a 2-3 year period.- Top
