I will be replacing my gas tank and was wondering whether it is advisable to also replace the filler neck. It's not leaking but I assume a new one will look better (or should I just clean up the original). Tech Board Archives indicate the filler neck for a 68 convertible as part number 3923690 but Paragon has it listed as GM part no. 6262261 (and states it is the same for a 63-67 convertible). Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance.

GM #6262261 was the filler neck used for all 1972-74 Corvettes. It was also SERVICE for 1970 with EEC and all 1971 Corvettes. It has an internal baffle as well as a longer lower fill tube than was originally used for 63-67 Corvette convertibles and all 1968-70 Corvettes (except 1970 EEC). It will function perfectly for any 1967-67 Corvette convertible as well as any 1968-70 Corvette.
Notwithstanding the above, I don't think that the filler neck that Paragon reproduces is actually the GM #6262261. I'm almost certain it's a reproduction of the GM #3826416 and/or GM #3923690; I don't think that the 6262261 is reproduced, at all. The GM #3826416 was used for 1963-67 Corvette convertibles. The GM #3923690 was used for 68-70 Corvettes (except 1970 with EEC) and was SERVICE for 1963-67 Corvettes. The 2 filler necks are virtually identical. In fact, I cannot discern ANY difference between the 2, but there must be some difference.
After having said all this, there is absolutely no reason that the filler neck needs to be replaced when the fuel tank is replaced. If there is no serious corrosion and the locking cam is not very worn (i.e. the cap still twist locks and holds tight), I would continue to use the original. Here's what you need to do, though:
1) Clean off any minor corrosion VERY carefully. You want to remove as little of the tin plated finish as possible. So, use something with as little abrasiveness as possible. And, don't use anything acidic;
2) CAREFULLY straighten the flange. You will note that the flange at each screw hole will be "pulled down" by the force of the screw pulling into the cork gasket. You need to use a small hammer and a flat syrface to "flatten these areas so that the flange is as "flat" as possible "all the way around";
3) Use new special screws to retain the neck to the tank. These screws have an integral, fuel-resistant seal. You can get them and the gasket from Dr. Rebuild.

Joe, thanks for the advice. Do you think household cleaners such as 409 or soft scrub would be OK to use? My inclination is to buy a new filler neck but if I can clean this one up without damaging the corrosion resistant properties I'll re-use it.- Top

Yes, I think that either of those will work without any damage. Whether they'll be effective in doing whatever cleaning you need done is something that I don't know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

About 8 years ago, I had to replace the tank in my 69, I reused the original filler neck (straightened the flange and used the Dr. Rebuild gasket and screws). Because mine was a little rusty, I cleaned it well and gave it a light zinc plating - still looks like new.
