    Loud Side Pipes

My side exhaust(stock, old)on my 65, 365hp, 21/2", are so loud that is very uncomfortable driving. I would like to tone them down to a reasonable tone. Any ideas????

Sounds to me like they're aged to pefection. When I bought my 396 side pipe coupe the previous owner graciously left a set of ear plugs in the glovebox.

      Hi Bob:

A new set will be so quiet, ( comparatively ) you won't believe it, for a while. I like loud and junked my 69 muffled sides in favor of chambered, if we go far we plug em, ( ears ). I have heard Allens Exhaust has a very quiet muffler in a size that can be welded into the original position, I haven't personally seen / heard them though.

Bob, when I get my coupe back from the present resto job I have a new set of B/B mufflers awaiting(aluminum)side pipes. I hope they sound as good as the old ones(factory originals) since I'm surrounded by Honda's and SUV's where I live. But I'll be up front with you, I love nothing better than the sound of solid lifters and a good set of Hooker headers clicking and clacking. You know the sound. I have fought off the devil in me and promised myself to keep the car as is,stock and original L-71.Enjoy the sounds. There are tons of people out there that would love to have a car that looks and sounds like yours,grr#33570

To my knowledge, the stock setup will not accomodate baffle inserts (I suppose you could jerry-rig something). You can replace your old pipes with a set of new reproductions from various vendors (example: www.sweet-thunder.com), but you better talk to someone who has been down this road to see if theres any improvement. Or you can save $400-$800 and stick with a set of earplugs...the driver uses the left plug, passenger uses the right. I don't suggest plugging both your ears, you won't hear your passenger yelling slow down or the sirens behind you ;-) I use the inconspicious clear silicone type that don't look like goofy red or orange playdough hanging out of your ears. -Dave

I've heard both "Jerry rig" and "Jury rig". I've always thought that "Jerry rig" was more "correct" (sorry Jerry ). I always thought (though I don't know for sure) that that particular version of that expression came out of World War II, since "Jerry" was the not-so-loving nickname we called the Germans. Does anyone else have any better idea where that expression came from?

I hear that headers really unleash the square port motors. I might just have to find out what headers and side pipes sound like.

                    Hi Bill:

I have heard both also, one in reference to the rigging of "jerry" cans , ( G.I. gas ), to the holders on Jeeps, then we have "Jury Rigged", now if it were in my best interest to rig one or the other I think I'd rather have the jury in my pocket, ex Chicagoan ya know.

                        Two things:

                        1) Keep the pipes, noise is the idea!!!

                        2) Jury Rig is a term from a Clipper Ship rounding the horn in the 1850's. The rudder snapped off of it in a storm and created a real problem. The ships carpenter, a man named "Jury" rigged a temporary rudder to get the ship to San Francisco. Hence the term "Jury Rigged". No I don't think the ship was carrying old Corvette parts. Anyway that's the story I heard from a fellow Navy vet.

                        regards

                          Re: loud?

I you think they're loud inside, just think what the poor innocent bystander on the corner hears. There is a walking/jogging trail across from the house. I had the baby out about a week ago and was just cruising along when I saw two people walking liesurely down the trail. I got about 50 feet behind them and put the pedal down. Man, I bet they got whiplash spinning around! I never really thought about the pedestrian aspect of pipes, but it has all the potential to really startle someone. Now that I know about it, I'll make sure I don't frighten anyone else. Well not too often anyway.

In the old days, when a side pipe equipped 65 was my daily driver, I stuffed some very coarse stainless steel wool in the ends. That would work pretty well until it blew out. My 67 has aluminumized pipes from Allen's Stainless Exhaust. They are a little bit quieter than the GM version. The baffles are different. You moight give them a try,or for that matter, inquire if they can make you some with extra baffles.

                              More fun with sidepipes!!!

You can also go out and set off car alarms at parking lots
