I have a 1967 coupe 427/435 with a CE motor in it. My P.O.P. states the JE engine was built 12/16... I am looking for a 3904351 block and 391 heads that will work with my P.O.P. dates... Any help on what dates are best and does anyone know where I can get these items. Thanks, Rick

Re: 1967 427/435 JE block and heads
Rick - Welcome to our NCRS family. The protect-o-plate provides other information but excludes the engine build date. That information is only on the engine itself which, if missing, may never be learned. If you check the trim tag, it provides a date for car assembly along with exterior and interior finish codes and a body sequence number (either A.O. Smith or St. Louis). Although NCRS will generally accept engine cast dates up to 6 months prior to the build date, 2 to 3 weeks prior is more realistic for production. I hope others will add to this thread to support, amend or correct what I say.
You may advertise free in the Driveline want ads and continue to see what others have for sale. Someone may be reproducing the heads (?).

Re: 1967 427/435 JE block and heads
Rick, Kent,
Your 67 P.O.P. should include the original engine assy date. I would look for a block that was cast at least a few days, and possibly a week or more, prior to that date. What was the aprox date your car was assembled?- Top

Re: 1967 427/435 JE block and heads
Rick, the block and heads you need are also in great demand by everyone trying to build a 435 horse car out of a base motor car. There is a guy on ebabe that has a lot of 427 parts and he is very proud of them. I've bought a couple of motors from him including the L-71 that's in my car now. I believe his seller ID is 427king.
Fortunately that was over 8 years or so ago and the price has tripled (at least) by now. The intake is being reproduced at around 3K, I've heard that the same guys making the intakes are also going to make #351 blocks and #391 heads.
Look at spending some big bucks building a complete L-71, upwards of 20K unless you get lucky.

Re: 1967 427/435 JE block and heads
Rick,
I would think that with a 12/16 engine assembly, almost any casting date prior to around 12/9 or so would be ideal. The NCRS allows 6 months prior to the build date of the car and I am assuming that would be around 12/25 (for more accurate date number post the last 5 of your vin)?
Considering the '351 block is a 1 year only block, and the '391 heads are a 1 year only head, you may have to take whatever you can find within the 6 month window. At least you don't have a september date--then you'd really have your work cut out for you! From what I have read here, there was no FIFO inventory system so blocks could sit for a while before machining.
There is currently a 2 bolt 351 engine on ebaby. It is a bit spendy at 10k (no bidders as of this moment). It has a J 10 6 date so I think it would be ok for you.
To convert this block for judging you would need to have it drilled and tapped for an external oil cooler, as these fittings are readily observable on the car and are not present on the 2 bolt variety. All other details between the two are identical. I do not know the specs for this modification, but I think it is pretty straightforward. I am sure Clem or another person with a lot of machining experience can provide them.
