C2 Glove box rivet, anomoly or

    later damage?

Interesting mark near one of the peened over studs on the back of my original 67 glove box door. Looks like the peening tool slipped, or could it be later damage? Was accused of using the drill out insert replacement method at judging, until I showed the judge the other rivets, which all look like this:

Wondering if anyone has a similar mark next to their GB door rivets?

      Hi Jerry:

My guess is that the rivet tool slipped at the factory. I'm not sure what the riveting tool head looked like, but it may have had the larger diameter associated with the marks in your photo.

I looked at my glove box door and found two rivets with anomalies. Most rivets looked like one at the first link below, but two of them had anomalies as shown in the next two links. It looks like the larger diameter marks may be similar to what you have, although in your case the guy completely missed the rivet on the first attempt.

By the way, my glove box door has been restored by Corvette Specialties of Maryland. Until I saw your recent series of posts on replacing the insert, I assumed that Corvette Specialties had some mysterious way of drilling out the rivets and then replicating the original factory appearance. I now suspect that Corvette Specialties uses the same process that you used, but I can't be sure.

So, the rivets in these photos are not guaranteed to be factory rivets.
