Re: Bolt head markings
John,
Please send me an email and I'll forward you 17 pages of scanned notes and sketched fasteners found when dissassembling my '67 Corvette. When I shared them with Roby Price, he suggested they be a supplement to the '67 Judging Guide representing fasteners and bolt head markings on a mid-production run '67. I had plans to write a Resorer article long ago but have procrastinated too long to accomplish it. If there is any way I could help further, please ask me. (My '69 BB will have the fasteners and bolt markings documented more extensively than my '67 but I'm just getting started.)
Merry Christmas,

Re: Bolt head markings
John,
I have substantial documentation on bolt head markings for the 58-60 cars. The challenge I am strugling with is to come up with a way of effectively presenting the information.
If you have any ideas send me an email and we can review each other's approach.

Re: Bolt head markings
I know that it takes a great effort to do what your doing but worry about what will happen like many other articles written making people think all Corvette were the same (a point that is misunderstood is that all bolts holding the C1 cross member are the same head markings) NOT! In judging already many corvettes show no character difference between each other , I mean all the same , people are removing parts that came on the Corvette to meet the JM because that's the game you must play to receive an award. Example I took a hit on the hood male latch bolts which are E's but the original E is off set , not centered and small but they wont to see the E centered and large. ( or just the marking E) regardless of design. Others say TR is correct- not 55.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that the JM has little to say about any parts design and only markings and numbers. I would never in most cases change all the bolts to meet a JM guide to gain a point knowing not all Corvette came looking the same way.- Top

Re: Bolt head markings
The judging manual can only be a guide in an area like this, simply because of the vagaries of production line work. That is why, in the guide, we often say "typical head markings are...."--that doesn't say ONLY--it means GENERALLY!
Anyone that has been around these cars for any length of time knows that there are typical head markings, with exceptions. You've got to know that the guy in the pit on the assembly line on the right side of the car didn't stop to ask the guy on the left side what head markings he was using. To them, a bolt was a bolt was a bolt, and whatever fit was the sole criteria for usage.
John, I applaud you for your efforts! I've been doing this on 61's and 62's for years, and have a pretty good handle on typical installations on almost every location. But, since I didn't follw every car through every stage of the line, I can't tell you for certain what was or was not installed at a specific location.
I CAN tell you that your Dorman bolt will not get you any credit!!!--no matter how much you or the guy who restored your car kicks and screams and tells me that it is original and it had never been removed before and you've traced it back to the original owner and you have a notarized affidavit to that effect.- Top
