Why did the Cross Flags change?

In 1984, I think, GM changed the crossed flag emblem's checked flag from the right side to the left side. Does anyone know why the change?

My guess would be that the GM design staff, which has complete control over these sort of things, somehow reckoned that the new emblem configuration better suited the new car. Designers are the same as artists. Just about every element of design is treated as "artistic expression".
