Here I am again. I have a 1968 327/350 L79 SN 194678S407219 build date December 1967. I'm looking for some one out there to pick your brains. The options I have is A31, A82, C07, C08, C60, G81, J50, N36, N40, and U69. I do have the orginal tank sticker (in really bad condition). The question I have for now is the Oil Filler Tube. I have been lead to beleive that it is chrome and has a tube coming out the side for the line that goes to the carburator. The assembly manuel shows (and Dr Rebuild says) no chrome and no tube. Orginal Parts Group cataloge reflects 1967-1968 327/350 hp L-79 cars (chrome). Any body out there know for sure what it should be?

The 1968 L-79 used in Corvettes had a filler tube that was NOT chromed and it had NO nipple or fitting. The nipple or fitting was used for EARLIER L-79 engines and was for the PCV system. 1868 Corvettes used a different configuration PCV system which eliminated the need for the nipple or fitting on the tube.
The 1968 oil filler tube was once known as GM #3923234. The same tube was used for ALL 1968 Chevrolet passenger car small block applications EXCEPT Z-28 (302 cid). I believe that the Z-28 tube may have been chromed. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: c3 1968 small block
I have an original owner 68 327/350 L79. Agree with Joe Lucia on the oil filler tube. The oil filler tube has a chrome cap. The engine has chrome valve covers with the PCV valve in the drivers side chrome valve cover and fresh air inlet on the passenger side valve cover.- Top

Re: c3 1968 small block
I am an original owner of a 68 convertible that also has an L79 327 350hp engine. The last two posts agree with what was delivered to me as a new car. The oil filler tube was painted chevy orange and had a chrome filler cap. There is no attachment to the PCV system nor is there any nipple on the tube.
Hope this helps

Re: c3 1968 small block
Joe, Jim, & Jim: Thank you very much. It really does help. I was going crazy. You see of the two valve cover I had, only one had a place to put the air inlet on the passenger side and the oil filler tube had a hole in it but no tube. Next question is there a right side and a left side valve cover? Or are they both identical? May be one of you could send me a picture of your engine looking at it head on and from the left and right. By the way what options does your cars have on them. If you could send the info and pictures to my email address I would appreciate it. AgSpotti@aol.com. Thanks again Jay- Top

My car has two different valve covers. Only one of them, the passenger side, has the hole for the PCV valve. The other has no holes in it at all. Both are flash Chrome, something the L79 had. My car has no options other than a heavy duty close ratio 4 speed. It was originally ordered for racing but the guy reneged on the purchase and I got it.
By the way, The PCV valve and hose came from the underside of the air cleaner not the filler tube. You wouldn't be able to see it in a pic of the engine unless the aircleaner was taken off the carburetor.

Re: c3 1968 small block
Jim:
OK now I am really confused. The assembly manuel for the 68 page H194 UPC6 C3 shows the Air cleaner asm going into the passenger side valve cover and the PVC valve coming out of the carburtor and going into the valve cover on the driver side. What am I missing?

Re: c3 1968 small block
The passenger side chrome valve cover for the 327/350 L79 for my original owner 68 has a metal tube that fits into the rubber fitting towards the rear of the valve cover. From the metal tube is a formed hose that attaches to a tube on the air cleaner from which fresh filtered air enters the engine. The drivers side chrome valve cover has a rubber fitting towards the front of the valve cover which houses the PCV valve that has a hose attached.- Top
