I'm looking at buying a 68 L89. The current owner tell me he mixes Torco and high test 50-50 for fuel for the car (The Torco is a couple years old so he blends 50-50. He said if the Torco was newer he was told he could go 70-30). If I buy the car I will be putting it in my garage and really don't have a lot of room for a 55 gal can of Torco. Does anyone have experience running this engine on something other than Torco? What are your recommendations? Thanks

Torco, Sunoco, VP, and other racing gas products do not have a very long shelf life. The "high end" additives tend to flash off rather quick. Plus some of the racing fuels, I do not know which ones, will leave deposits in the fuel system if left over a period of time. I would go with the 93 octane recommendation.Dick Whittington- Top

Dick, that is interesting for me what you say about the racing fuels. Since I regularly am using Sunoco or VP 110 leaded in my vintage road race Corvette, I had concerns about either getting fuel from the bottom of the barrel that possibly had been there for a while or leaving fuel in jugs or in the fuel cell for extended periods. Whenever I asked about this, I was always told that the racing fuel did not "go bad" or break down like normal passenger car fuels as it did not have all of the additives or something like that. Not disputing you at all, just saying that is what I have been told - but it was by the seller of the fuel Can you tell me anything more about exactly what happens when 110 leaded sits for a while, does it lose its octane rating or anything that might affect performance?- Top

Same for my 66 425 HP car with 11-1 CR. I have no problem with 93 octane fuel. I don't get on it hard though, especially in hot weather. That requires different fuel.- Top
