More C2 63 Questions From Gus

Gus asked me about the following items from the 3rd edition of the 63-64 JG. Page 88, section 5, L84 fuel injection air cleaner.

#1 Air cleaner mounting reinforcement plate on back side of wheelwell.

"THE PLATE IS INSTALLED PRIOR TO WHEELWELL UNDERCOATING AND THEREFORE HAS EVIDENCE OF UNDERCOATING ON THE EXPOSED SURFACE".

I thought that the reinforcement was added later, after wheelwell undercoat.

#2 Screws that fasten the "S" tube to the core support.

"A KNOWN ORIGINAL HEADMARK OF THE EARLY TYPE SCREW IS "M". AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1963 VIN 9000, A BLACK PHOSPHATE HI-HAT RECESSED HEX-HEAD SHEET METAL SCREW IS USED".

I thought all 63's and early 64's used a 5/16" hex head screw with an "L" headmark. I thought the high-hat 1/4" screw didn't appear until early in the 64 run.

#3 Location of the three air cleaner clamps that secure the rear elbow to the main canister.

"THE CORRECT LOCATION FOR THE UPPER-MOST CLIP IN EARLY TO MID 63 MODELS IS ABOVE THE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET. IN MID TO LATE 63, THE CLIPS WERE ROTATED AND THE UPPERMOST CLIP WAS MOUNTED BESIDE THE REINFORCING BRACKET, CLOSER TO THE INNER FENDER SKIRT". oVERLAP IS POSSIBLE HERE, WITH MID TO LATE 63 AND EARLY 64 MODELS SHOWING EITHER STYLE OF CLIP LOCATION".

I thought the order was reverse, with the clip moving to the reinforcement bracket in mid 63, not off of the bracket. I also thought that the 1st design air cleaner was replaced in production because of interference with the choke hot air tube and at some point, all 1st design air cleaners were replaced with 2nd design so it's would be highly unlikely to see a 1st design on a late 63 and especially on a 64.

    #4 Air cleaner finish. (paint)

"THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY WAS PAINTED GLOSS BLACK".

I thought the main can of the air cleaner was painted gloss black but the "S" tube was dip painted in semi gloss black.

    ---------------------------------------------

    Any input/info/documentation appreciated.

It's possible that these items have been changed/corrected in the 4th edition so disregard if this is the case.

    You wanted opinions or fact?

    My opinion:

Friend has an original '64 fuelie. Built about January. Has the "L" head screw (two. two are missing) Mike Graziano re-did the car in mid 80's. Never been wrecked. Don't know where he'd get the screws otherwise.

I just re-did an air cleaner and "S" that still had the original paint. Best I remember, the tube had semi-flat paint on it and wasn't painted on the inside. The air cleaner was glossy but not like an automotive finish coat. I used Rustoleum industrial glossy black which seemed to match the original well.

I'll have to back away from the table of knowledge now.

      Re: You wanted fact?

      For a Mar64 car the following exists;

The S Tube screws are 5/16 with a "L" non Hihat (three still exist)
The S Tube appears to be semi gloss with some black (dull however)on the inside with more paint apparent on the side nearest the motor.

Your concern is; do you want to met the JG or keep original, these may not be concurrent today. Sorry
