    C-2 tank sticker

Could someone Email me how to see if the tank sticker is still on my 67 without tearing the almost 40 year old tank boot. I searched the archives for "tank boot" and got 3500+ hits. I may not live that long. Thank you in advance. Dale

    Dale,

Unless you have a flexible camera lens you probably won't find it even with the boot off, at least on a convertible. I changed my boot and tried with mirrors to no avail. Should still be there.

To do it right, you need one of those camera probes they use for a cystoscopy or colonoscopy. (I've had both ) Maybe your urologist will lend you one, if you go in from the boot Otherwise you'll need the big one to go up from the bottom.

But the boot is probably cracked after 40 years anyway, and it is not a big deal to replace. But you should have something you can see through and throw light at a right angle.

Maybe it is easier on a coupe?

    Regards, just kidding

I carefully moved the boot to the right, stuck my skinny hand holding a small digital camera aimed high left of center on the tank and shot a large number of pics. This is the best I got... on a coupe. A convertible would require a little more wrist twisting but can be done. Take your time; this one picture took a few days of messing around to do no damage. Notice that even in a clear shot, little valuable information can be read.

        Nick,
I think you will find that, if you ever drop your tank, you will find a layer of heavy dust on your paper. That obscures quite a bit the material. Carefull brushing with a very soft brush should clear most of the dust off. My tank sticker is off and in my file but about 25% of it is not clear. I was able to use Adobe Photoshop and change the background and contrast to clear things up. I actually had a graphics designer email me off line and he talked me through some fairly simple ways to increase the contrast and make things more legible. I can now read about 95% of the information on my photocopied document. Don't give up.

This car was a low mile, well preserved Bowtie and Benchmark candidate, so I did not want to drop the tank. When I evaluate an "all original" 67 Corvette and notice that the tank has been removed and re installed, and the "tank sheet" is no longer attached in what I would consider an original manner, and not covered in that patina of dirt and age, I wonder a bit about the car. These sheets once removed lose some of their significance, for obvious reasons. They are copied, bought, sold and counterfeited...JMHO...

A restoration is an entirely different matter and your advice in that regard is valid and noteworthy. I am just one of those originality freaks.

What would you do if the tank inside was rusty and had many loose particles? Would you replace the tank or is there another solution? Sure would be tough to shake it enough while in the car to use sloshing solution.

If the car were mine, even an all original low mile Bowtie car, I would do a complete vidio and still photo shoot on a tank replacement. Then save the original tank (Sticker an all) for future history of the car.

I am sorry Kent, But I still like to DRIVE them.

Yes, on another car that I planned to drive a lot I did just that, recorded the removal, left everything in tact on the original, and installed a new tank. When I sold the car, the original tank with "sticker" still attached and the original hardware went with it.

I'm dying to drop my tank, but it must wait until Bow Tie judging is completed, when ever I get to that .

With my roadster, I can clearly see two tank stickers. The top one is pretty dirty, but it is for my car. The bottom one is crystal clear and from a Lynndale blue coupe with air conditioning.
