    66 exhaust black out

Can someone comment on the issue of blacking out the under car exhaust on a 1966 SB equipped with the Allen aluminized off road system? Specificaly, is it a big judging points issue? Exactly what black out material is used? what is "mitted" application in JG? and finally how much of the exhaust must be black (from where to where). I have heard from some Top Flight car owners that their cars received no deductions on lack of blacked out exhaust at regional judging.
    thanks.

    Danny,

I followed John Hinkley's advice on blackout when I blacked out my 66 SB roadster. His comments are in the archives. The mitting process seems to be an old wive's tale. The car would come down the line and painters would spray the muffler area standing at the outside of the car. Blackout would reach the outer and lower portion of the mufflers and maybe part of the exhaust pipe a short distance in front of the muffler. There maybe a little overspray on the spare tire tub. Blackout was to cut down on the shine of the natural metal to make it more appealing whiel the car sat in the show room.

    Regards,
    Dave K.

Sorry I did not do a search first. Guess us new comers look pretty green. I found the information today from the older messages. Glad I did give someone a good laugh.
        Thanks for all the help.

          Danny,
Don't feel bad, this question is asked frequently and John comes to the rescue every time.

I believe the next (5th) edition of the '67 JG will no longer have any references to the "mitting" urban legend.
