    Z06 inspection marks

Ya I know this is too new but it's never too early to start archiving data

Pic is from the LA auto show last weekend.

    Re: Z06 inspection marks

Very few hand written marks on the new cars. As John Hinckley posted recented, all fastener torques are computer-checked during assembly and recorded in the plant data base.

The Z06 inner fender must be different from the base car, and "this is your sign" for the assembly workers.

I believe the inner front fender panel, like the outer front fender panel, is made from carbon fiber rather than SMC.

I don't think it's carbon fiber, but the one on my car is marked the same. It's an 06 Z06.

I've never seen bare carbon fiber parts, so I wouldn't know it if I stumbled over it, but that inner fender material does look the exact same color and texture as my convertible.

Whatever material the inner fender is made of (probably SMC), you don't won't to drip oil on it...it sucks oil up like a sponge, and you can't wick it out very well with lacquer thinner. If you wipe an oil drip off the old bare FRP fairly quicly, you wouldn't see a stain after wiping the area with lacquer thinner...not this stuff.

The answer is in GM's 2006 Corvette introduction press releaase dated Aug. 1, 2005:

"Carbon-fiber composite front fenders, front wheelhouses, and floor panels"

              Duke...

You've been lusting after and coveting a Z06 since before they were public. You've got all the literature and specs memorized; why the heck don't you just go on and buy one?...You can't take all that money with you, you know.

                Re: Duke...

Neat car, but my ardor has mitigated in the last year.

I only drive a couple of thousand miles a year and like my current collection of vintage cars, which fulfill all my driving needs, and the opportunities to "exercise" a 500 HP car are limited. Plus, I have a space problem - no way to handle a fifth car and keep it nearby, and I don't want to off anything I currently own.

Plus I don't like the idea of "investing" in a depreciating asset, and there's really nothing you can do to a new car. They're so good as designed and built, about all you can do is screw them up if you start messing with them. My vintage cars have been good laboratories to exercise my engineering skills.

I know I can't take it with me, which is why I set up Williams family endowments at the three universities (Washington, Wisconsin, and UCLA) that granted me degrees. I want to die as wealthy as possible, so the endowments receive as much funding as possible. They'll be used to fund graduate student fellowships (ME at Washington, The Engine Reseach Center at Wisconsin, and The Anderson School at UCLA) One's interests and priorities change as we journey through life.

If not me, certainly my parents, who were great people, deserve a lasting legacy.

If I ever do decide that I "need" a new car, a new Corvette is about the only one I would consider. The current crop of new cars (except the Corvette) leaves me completely cold.
