    C2 327 - 300 Valve covers

Are the valve covers used on a 66 327/300 hp unique to the corvette. I'm looking at a pair of used ones and I want to be sure that they are for the corvette and not from some passenger car. They kind of look like the pictures that I have, but they don't seem to have as pronounced of a depression in the middle. Did a passenger car use something "close" to the Vette style.

As always, thanks in advance for the education and your replys.

I think I may have found the problem. These are early 63 covers. It appears that those did not have the trangular ends on the raised bosses in the middle. The raised boss was fairly flat to the rest of the cover. Anybody need a set. Before I cancel the deal, are these worth anything being that they were only used on the early 63s?

        Re: C2 327 - 300 Valve covers

Bob - I'm quite sure the valve covers on the 66 Corvette base motor, and the 66 327 Chevelles, Chevrolets, and Chevy IIs are the same. The Chevrolet Parts Books I have that lists Chevrolet Pass and Corvette shows one SERVICE Part for both Pass and Corvette. It's probably the one with the clips.

There were two different configurations to this design valve cover. The difference had to do with the length of the triangular slope on both sides of the retangular pad at the center of the cover, but I don't recall which one was the shorter and which the longer and what years. Pete

Thanks for the quick response Pete, and thanks for looking up all that info for me. It looks like these are early 63 covers. I was told that they were from a 65. It appears that the early 63s used the ones with the lessor elevated center triangular area. I would think that these would be somewhat rare based on their limited use, but it doesn't look like it based on some of the prices I've seen. Again, thanks for the response.

                Pete and Bob-----

The "early style" 327 valve covers were used for 1962-63. It's possible that their use ended prior to the end of the 1963 model year and it's also possible that they were carried over into the first part of the 1964 model year. In any event, GM says that these valve covers, GM #3813915, were used for 1962-63 for passenger cars, Corvettes and light trucks with 327 engines and steel valve covers.

For 1964-66, valve cover GM #3849169 was used for Corvettes, passenger cars, and light trucks with steel valve covers. It also became the SERVICE valve cover for 62-63 applications in May, 1964 when the GM #3813915 was discontinued.

1967 Corvettes with 300 hp used a valve cover which was very similar to the 59 and later Corvette and passenger car 283 steel valve covers. It was GM #3850049.

In October, 1968, the GM #3849169 valve cover was discontinued and replaced by the GM #3910298. In December, 1971 the GM #3850049 was discontinued and replaced by the GM #3910298.

The GM #3910298 is a completely different configuration from any steel valve cover originally used for ANY Corvette small block. In fact, the 3910298 is a SERVICE-only valve cover and was not used for PRODUCTION engines (although it may have been used for some complete SERVICE engine assemblies). It is similar to the 1968 Corvette 300 hp steel covers except that it has no holes for PCV.

Just FYI, they are highly sought after by owners of '62 and early '63 250-300hp Corvettes.

As explained by Joe, This configuration isn't what you might describe as rare because all of Chevy's low/moderate hp V-8s used them in 62 and early 63.

                        However comma

What would make them rare and desirable is the condition. I've seen perfect pairs bring $75 - $100 buck on eBay all the time. If dents are present however they aren't worth $20.

Once you sort out the rocker arm covers, you may find getting proper (unique) '66 labels to be difficult. Unless things have changed recently, the aftermarket decals from the typical vendors are of the water-slide variety, and they are about 1/4" too large to fit into the flat of the pad on the cover. In other words, the edges will spill over the contoured ledge if not trimmed. I was able to locate a pair of adhesive-backed vinyl labels in an eBay auction about 3 years ago. They fit nicely & are holding up well.
