1967 Engine and Compartment ,CORRECT restoration

My 67 300 HP Convertible has an original untouched Engine compartment. I just had an exceptional external Repaint of Sunfire Yellow and when you open the hood it detracts from the overall appearance.
It is beginning to deteriorate and Rust in some areas. I would like to properly restore the entire compartment and the engine components. The engine has 67,000 mi.and has never been apart.

Where can I find the best guidance to properly, but not over restore these items. I need to address everything that is exposed including the frame.
An example that I am concerned about is it has the original radiator with all the factory markings still intact.
Should I mix and match the original items with new paint items where needed?

Take lots of photos of all the details before you start. Then as you refurbish items, refer to your photos to get things correct again.

        Reuse original items whenever possible!!!!!

I agree with everything Steve said above.

The car sounds like it has been cared for, and has been maintained in original, low mileage condition. In almost all cases, the CAR is the best reference for a correct restoration...when cars have been "modded" over the decades, then you have to be an expert just to sort out the General from the "Bubba".

In this case, the car sounds like a very good reference. Without being an "expert", you can do a good restoration by just putting it back like you found it. Use all the original parts that you can...you will find that original parts are, for the most part, no longer available.

                Mark,

As was said above, take plenty of pictures beforehand as a guide for refinishing and documentation. Take pictures of all the date codes, casting and part numbers you find.

Refinish original parts as you found them, perhaps regardless of what the Judging Guide calls for, it isn't always correct. For instance, I found that my 67 base engine convertible(22049) had a zinc plated carburetor spring bracket, whereas the JG calls for it to be painted with the engine. I put it back refinished the way I found it, but wished I had documented the original finish (with just drip spots of original paint, like it had been masked or put on later and the manifold area/bolts touched up).

I later got the JG and found that it was supposed to be painted with the engine, but left it as I found it. Would be interested to know whether yours is painted or zinc plated and what your VIN is.

Also, if it is an AO Smith car, does it have a green checkmark on the trim tag.

You might want to post a few pictures for us historical guys. If you need any small mailable parts zinc, dichromated or phosphate plated, you can emsil me.
I found that a lot of the painted and blacked out parts, (radiator, hood, and compartment areas, also underside of air cleaner cover) clean up well with just Simple Green.

                Have fun,

                    Mark,
You state you want to restore the engine compartment, does that mean you want to paint the block, intake, etc? If so, do you intend to pull the engine or leave it in? You have a lot of options depending on what your intentions are. I "restored" my engine compartment and the underside of my 67 L79 by leaving the engine in but it required a lot of patience and masking.

                        That's just the top.
Lots of masking and disassembly, and I still got overspray all over.

Jerry, My computer is out for repairs and I'm using our garage computer so I don't have pictures available but I took the valve covers, exhaust manifold, starter and many other parts off just to paint the block. It was a fun winter project last year. It all depends how anal you want to be!!!
