Plastic Shroud over the distibuter on 81 Vette

Just curious, what is the function, if any, of the plastic shroud that covers the distributer/ignition on my 81 Vette. I just bought the car recently and mine doesn't have one. I've owned 2 previous 81's years ago and they both had it?

I think the foil on the inside was to help radio static-noise.

Lyle is correct, the shielding is suppose to help reduce ignition interference. The shielding is ground to the engine with a ground wire attached to the shield and the upper rear valve cover bolt.
