Last weekend I reinstalled the rear differential in my 67 coupe after a complete rebuild and suspension restoration. My question concerns the torque value for the "nose bolt" that attaches the front of the differential carrier bracket to the frame. I'm at work and going on memory, but I belive the torqe value in the Assembly Manual for this bolt is given as 40 - 50 ft lbs. When I started torquing this bolt, the two new rubber bushings kept distorting until they were very "squashed" and still the torqe value had not been reached. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you keep tightening until the stated torque value is reached even if it almost completely flattens the two rubber bushings?

If you are using the correct set of front washers, one has a Sleeve in it as I remember to limit the crush, and is also configured with a "step" to align it with the hole in the frame,Bill Clupper #618- Top

Self-limited cushion compression
The big sleeve will contact the big washer on the bottom of the big cushion after only about 3/8" rubber compression; after that it's just the 55-75 ft.lbs torque of metal-to-metal.
Retired examples: on left is from a 396 w/3.70 gears; on the right is from a 365hp w/4.11 gears.
