54 exhaust system paint

Was the exhaust system on the 54 painted black before assembly? Was the complete system painted? Were the clamps and hangers also painted?

Don't know about '54 specifically, but later C1's had the exhaust system sprayed liberally with chassis blackout paint just prior to Body Drop (not before the parts were assembled to the chassis). Doubt if the sprayers paid a lot of attention to keeping paint off the hangers.

According to

various experts, a thin asphalt-like paint was used. Since the pipes were plain steel, it seems likely the systems on these cars were already rusting in the showroom.
