Yes, Find a friend in New York state and sell him/her the car ( so to speak ). New York is a registration only state and they don't put that the car was a salvage on the registration. Have your friend then sell it back to you and when you title the car from the NY registration it will not be salvage any more. I did this in the past and it worked perfect.

      Re: Salvage titles

If the salvage title is a state, other than New York, and you get a clear NY title, that's fine. But, if you try to title it in another state, there is a very good possibility it will show up as a salvage title again. These days, especially after Katrina, the NCIC has been tracking salvage titles very closely. FWIW. Dave

that I don't know, but I would do it anyway as it would seem like alot of work to track the history of every title that changed hands in a non title state.

          Re: Salvage titles

To clarify, I meant "keeping track" of salvage titles", not "tracking". I don't know how old the car is, that Tony refers to. But, if it is 20-25 years old or more, a rebuilt title with original VIN number has little, if any, effect on it's value. A newer car with a rebuilt or assembled title, or State-Issued VIN would definitely has an effect on value. Dave

I agree. Tony probably has a classic corvette that was recently restored and he doesn't want "salvage" associated with it anymore. I would think newer cars would be what the law is focusing on more.

Re: Salvage titles - something to consider

I know that in the past few years, title branding has been tightened up quite a bit due to cars being damaged by Katrina and other sources being "freshened up" and sold around the country. There used to be a big market in the midwest of people buying salvage cars/trucks, repairing them and then jumping across state lines to clean up the title. Many of these places have disappeared and it might be due to a change in preserving brands on salvage vehicles. It might have been quite a few years ago that the New York exchange happened and things are now done diferently. Eric

                Re: Salvage titles

A little off topic however I have a question. What do owners of big money older Corvettes registered in New York with just a license receipt do when they want to see want to sell their car at the Barrett Jackson Auction? Barrettt Jackson specifically states that they will only sell "titled" cars. They will not sell cars with only license receipt registrations unless they have changed their policy or Arizona law has changed.

I know there are still several states (NY, ALA, GA) that register older cars, typically 1975 or older, with only license receipts and no titles.

                  Re: Salvage titles

Before you decide to wash a title in NY you may want to check with local practices and federal laws. Many states require a title history going back several years to avoid washing a title. When this happens NY will have to provide the paperwork submitted when a NY registration was issued to the new state issuing the title. This could be evident if the NY registration is for a short period of time.

Washing a title is clearly a felony in most states and may be a violation of Federal ICC laws also. The price you could pay may be much more than it is worth.

Tony and Don, How about posting the VIN's of the car you want to launder their Salvage Titles, so if I or other NCRS members consider buying them we will know they histories and are rebuilt cars, and take that into consideration?
