    C2 Differental

After having my 66's differential rebuilt, I'm now in the process of reinstalling. Question is: Is there any alignment procedure when you attach it to the differential support. I checked the differential and its support for any type of alignment marks but, as you probably already know, found none.

    Thanks,

    Kenn

No, the three double Hooke-jointed shafts easily handle any production variation in axle orientation when mounted, and my recommendation would be to replace the front cushions unless they appeared to be literally brand new.

      Thanks, Duke

Yes, all three cusions are being replaced. They were beyond recovery.

        Kenn-----

THREE cushions? There are only 2 cushion assemblies that mount the differential at the snubber-to-frame location. There are 2 additional cushion assemblies that mount the removeable crossmember (to which the differential unit is bolted) to the frame. There are no other cushions of any sort involved in the differential assembly mounting. So, depending upon how you figure it, there are either 2 or 4 cushions involved. I don't know where three comes from.

          Joe,

The third cushion, I was refering to, was the one at the front of the differential where the forward mount attaches to the frame.

          Thanks for your sharp eye.

            Center the play

Kenn, as Duke says, the universal joint can handle any slight mis-alignment of the diff carrier assembly, but while I had mine on the garage floor, after attaching but not tightening the X-member (w/cushions), I determined the max range of swing movement, then made sure that the "play" was equally divided [ie. that the member was pretty close to 90 degrees to the centerline of the diff] before tightening the 4 top bolts.

              Thanks, Wayne,

That's exactly what I did. That is, after using a large T-square and eyeballing. So much for exactness???

              Thanks again,

                Kenn -

There are TWO cushions where the diff nose bracket attaches to the frame - one between the nose bracket and the bottom of the frame bracket, and another above the frame bracket, under the bolt head.

Your exactly right, John. My mistake was that I was viewing the assembly as one since they were connecting at a single point. Need to be more correct in my view.
