    61 fuel guage

Almost on the road, put the battery in and the fuel guage went straight past full. The fuel I put in should only be about 2/3 of a tank full. The guages were serviced and detailed before installing. Any suggestion as to where to start trouble shooting or tips on procedure to resolve fuel guage problem?
    Thank you in advance!
Foot note: reproduction metal fuel line from the pump to the filter and the damn thing leaks. Can't get it tight enought. Tried filing back the threads so the fitting would tighten more, still a little drip. I don't think the flare is right. Won't you think reproduction parts could be correct. What's so hard about making something right?- Well, thats off my chest now.

Is the new line stainless? I've heard stainless is hard to seat properly.

Remove the wire to sending unit, do not let it touch ground, turn on the key, if the gauge move you have a short in the wiring, if the gauge does not move you have a problem with the sending unit.

With the sending unit brown gauge wire disconnected at the sender and the key on, the gauge should peg to "full"; with the brown wire grounded, the gauge should peg to "Empty" - that will verify the gauge and the wiring from the gauge to the tank. If that checks out OK, the problem is in the sending unit.
