    71 LT1 fan shroud

Can someone give me some info on fan shroud 3956109 and extension 3956118. I bought what is suppose to be a NOS shroud and extension. The shroud and extension have the part numbers on them but no other markings. The extension seems to be painted and is not the same texture as the shroud. It is solid black where as the shroud is black gray. Thanks for any help Bob

    Bob------

These sorts of differences between the shroud and extension are fairly common. Plus, keep in mind that these parts changed in terms of coloration and "texture" over the years fo their manufacture. There's no guarantee that the pieces that you have are from the same "era" and there's a high liklihood that they're not from the same "era". The 3956118 extension was discontinued about 25 years ago. The GM #3956109 shroud was discontinued within the last few years.

Thanks Joe, Would a nos shroud have any other markings on it, other than the part number? My shroud that is in my vette has the part number and a kind of a box stamped under it.

        Bob-----

The mark that you refer to is a manufacturer's ID mark. Some GM shrouds do not seem to have one. This surprises me since the fact that it was on some shrouds seems to indicate that the GM specs for the part must have included the requirement that a manufacturer's ID be emplaced on the part. However, it's possible that no such requirement was on the specs and one of the manufacturers elected to put it on their product whereas others did not.

Would these parts haveing the GM part numbers on them be more than likely nos and ok for judging? Thanks again Bob

I believe that it's very likely that they are NOS. However, parts can be NOS and still be different than what is generally accepted as the configuration originally used on the cars (as I mentioned, parts change over the years). I really don't know how well these particular parts would do in judged events.
