    '67 BB Water pump rebuild

Thanks to all who responded to my previous post. I've pulled the (original) water pump out, and it sounds kind of gritty when I spin the shaft. There is a trail of residue out of the "weeping hole" on the bottom. As so many diagnosed, I'm pretty sure the seal, and most likely the bearing is shot. I'd like to rebuild it, even though it looks like it will cost me more than a replacement. The only source I have been able to find is Long Island Corvette for $35. I don't know what that includes. I'll call around tomorrow the local auto-parts stores for a re-build kit. The store I tried today came up with nothing. Can anyone recommend another source for a re-build kit? I have access to a press, but is there any other special tools I will need to rebuild it? Will the kit include a shaft and impeller, or just bearings and gaskets (or just gaskets)? - David Knowles

I doubt that you'll have any luck getting a rebuild kit at an auto parts store. Most have not carried water pump parts in years. They'll probably look at you funny when you ask and tell you that they can sell you a complete rebuilt water pump for $29.99, or something.

Zip Products also carries the rebuild kits, but their price is $45 for the 427 pump kit. So, from this standpoint, you'd be better off with Long Island. I don't think that you're going to get a kit for too much less than $35, anyway.

The kit will include the bearing and shaft assembly. These are not seperable pieces, but a complete, factory-assembled unit. You will also get a seal and seat, sometimes as two pieces and sometimes as a complete, 1 piece assembly. Lastly, you will get a backing plate gasket. That's usually all you'll get; you'll have to reuse your pump housing, impeller, hub, and backing plate.

The press is the primary tool that you'll need. However, you'll also need an assortment of press fixtures and "made-up" tools to support the pump components in the various stages of disassembly and assembly.
