Last night I was trying to clean up this block to get it ready for the machine shop. Underneath 39 years of grease and dirt there are the letters HE on both sides of the block which were crayoned(?) in yellow with the block upside down. There is some blue marker on there, too. This is over the orange paint. I'm sure this is from the factory. When and why?

The block and/or head was crayoned on the engine assembly line to identify it, much the same way as the body build number was applied to bodies. I do not have a 1967 Guide, but "extrapolating" from my 1965 guide, I would think that "HE" is 327/300, manual trans, no TI, no A/C.

Always nice to see the engine code on the sides of the block. Further documents the car/engine.
By the way, the letter code was put on the raw cast iron sides of the block before the orange paint was applied. The code was there so the assembler knew which engine internal components were to be installed. As the years passed, the orange paint flaked foo the letters which made them appear to be written over the orange, not under it.- Top

The code and "job number" was definitely on the cyl heads of 63-66 and just the job number for 67. The engine code became a label on the end of the valve cover for 67.
I'm not sure when this practice started but I believe the C1 cars had these numbers/letters on the clutch housing. Joe#930 mentioned a 57 clutch hsng last week that had the code and number on it.
The location moved from the clutch hsng to the back of the cyl head for 63 because the new clutch hsng was ribbed and it would have been impossible to use that surface for these numbers. Bet there are some pic's in Nolands book.- Top

Hi Kevin...
Yes, the engine code was on the sides of the bare block, upside down. The block came down the conveyor upside down so the letter code would then be right side up so the assemblers could see/read it and install the correct c/shaft, rod piston assy's and cam etc.
The code on the end of one cyl head would be over the orange paint for engine ID after the engine was completed.- Top
