    Jack -

There is not one whit of difference between a solid-lifter cam and a hydraulic-lifter cam in terms of lobe wear - the lifter faces are identical, and both use the same "grocery-getter" valve springs in the OE configuration. Your mechanic is probably thinking about aftermarket solid-lifter cams with wild flank accelerations and Gonzo double valve springs.

Thanks Duke and John. That is a relief to me about the cam and lifters. I wanted to stay with the solids. Duke I will probably contact you about that testing you offered if is not to much trouble for you. When you talk about the importance of the head work. Is there a description of the headwork that would go with the LT 1 cam? I'm leaning that way.

The head and valve work is described in "How to Hot Rod Your SB Chevy", the Chevrolet Power manual, and various books by David Vizard.

The work only involves grinding on the first inch or so above the valve (less on the short side radius) and no more than the first inch beyond the manifold flange.

The interior of the port should be left alone other than removing any obvious casting flash, and "polishing" is neither necessary or desireable.

The whole point of this excercise is to increase port flow efficiency, not port cross section area or volume.

This "street high performance" head prep is applicable for any street cam, includilng the 300 HP cam. It will yield 10-15 percent more top end power, 500-1000 more useable revs, but have virtually no impact on low end torque.

For anyone looking for "more power" the first order of business is to massage the heads.

        Duke

Re: John's advice is dead on.

The way I heard this quote was a banner on the wall at Smokey Yunicks shop that read "There is only one substitute for cubic inches and THAT IS MORE CUBIC INCHES
