My mechanic now tells me that the new style rear main seals(not the rope type)that he has are blue plastic and he says will require doing block work!! Is this correct? I am going to do the rest of the work myself so I need a good recommendation as to what brand or supplier I should use. Thanks.

He may be thinking about trying to use the '60-up stock 2-piece rear seal, which won't work with a pre-'60 "rope seal" block. Paragon has the 2-piece neoprene rear main seal made specifically as a direct replacement for the "rope" seal in pre-'60 engines (their #4340K), Fel-Pro also makes one (don't recall the number), and Gary Pronesti (352-253-1957) has them, his #BPE-200. The "improved" rear main seal doesn't require any block or cap work at all; I used Paragon's on my '57 ten years ago, and it never leaked a drop.- Top
