    265 c.i. rear mains

My mechanic now tells me that the new style rear main seals(not the rope type)that he has are blue plastic and he says will require doing block work!! Is this correct? I am going to do the rest of the work myself so I need a good recommendation as to what brand or supplier I should use. Thanks.

    Steve -

He may be thinking about trying to use the '60-up stock 2-piece rear seal, which won't work with a pre-'60 "rope seal" block. Paragon has the 2-piece neoprene rear main seal made specifically as a direct replacement for the "rope" seal in pre-'60 engines (their #4340K), Fel-Pro also makes one (don't recall the number), and Gary Pronesti (352-253-1957) has them, his #BPE-200. The "improved" rear main seal doesn't require any block or cap work at all; I used Paragon's on my '57 ten years ago, and it never leaked a drop.

      Steve,
I got mine from Paragon about two years ago and have had the same "no leak" outcomes as John. No additional block work on my '56 265 was needed. Good luck.
