'68 350/350 flywheel and clutch size

I'm trying to undo the clutch modifications on a former drag car. It now has a Lakewood scattershield, stiff aftermarket clutch, and a 14" diameter GM flywheel.

I thought the '68 350/350 engine was originally equipped with the smaller 12.75" flywheel with a 10.4" diameter clutch. Is that correct, or could this 14" flywheel and 11" clutch set-up be the original size for this car?

Jerry from your previous posts I know that it is only a typo error of a 68 350/350. You do mean 327/350 like in L79 engine. I have one, but it was way back in 72 when I put a clutch and pressure plate in it.

      Jerry-----

ALL 1968 Corvette 327/350 (L-79), or, for that matter, even 1969 350/350 (L-46), used a 14", 168 tooth flywheel with an 11" clutch. 1965-67 L-79s DID USE a 12-3/4" flywheel and 10.4" clutch as did all small blocks of the 63-67 period.

        Thanks Jim and Joe

Of course you're right. I should have said that the car originally had a 327/350hp. This Corvette currently has a nineties Goodwrench 350, and I can't get that out of my mind. Yeah, that's the ticket. It's really the car's fault.

I appreciate the information about the 11" clutch. I didn't know that any small blocks had come with the big flywheel.

          Jerry-----

I'm sorry, but I need to correct myself. 1968 Corvettes with 327 cid engine DID use the 12-3/4" flywheel(153 tooth ring gear) and the 10.4" clutch. So, they were the same as all of the other 63-67 Corvette small blocks. The change to the 14" flywheel and 11" clutch occurred for 1969 small blocks (350 cid).

          From 1969 to 1981 all Corvettes with 350 cid engines/manual trans used the 14" flywheel/11" clutch EXCEPT for 70-72 ZR-1 and 1978 with L-48 engine. How come 1978 with L-48 used the 12-3/4" flywheel/10.4" clutch? That's a good question.

Sorry for the misinformation in my previous post.

Never mind all the discourse! Install a nodular iron performance flywheel (L-88)from GM performance parts and use a centerforce pressure plate and clutch. This combo is good for 10,000 RPM and the flywheel is less than 18 lbs. (13 lbs I think). I've used McCloud combination "borg beck-long" semi competition pressure plates and clutches with great success. You can use an 11 inch clutch with the nodular flywheel if you go this route. The stock diaphram type pressure plate sometimes sticks to the floor on a launch and then pops up unexpectantly to break your ankle! I've heard this story a dozen times and experienced it once only I was lucky and sustained no injury.

            Varooom!
