    Looking for 71 coupe

    Trying to locate a 1971 coupe, originally Classic White with a Black Vinyl interior. Base motor car. Believe the car went from north Alabama to Massachusetts many years ago. Believe the VIN to be 19437S123200 (or possibly 19437S123800).

    I have the original tank sticker for this car.

      There is a section in the Driveline for posting this type of request. Try it and see what kind of action you get.

        Might want to check the vin one more time as there were only 21801 cars produced that year. Could your number be 12320?

          Re: Looking for 72 coupe

          Don't know where my brain is - this is a 72 coupe.

          VIN is 1Z37K2S523200.
          Car has the following options: A31, C60, J50, M40, N37, N40, PU9, U69.
          Car is classic white with a bliack vinyl interior.

          I find it interesting that a 72 coupe is identified on the tank sticker as
          19437.

            More Body Model Trivia Than You Wanted...

            "I find it interesting that a 72 coupe is identified on the tank sticker as
            19437."

            The 19437 was an internal designation for the body model (coupe)...it was used internally more widely than just the VIN, so maybe it's not too surprising to see it still on the tank sticker after the VIN format changed.

            One example of this is any AIM pages that are applicable to both body styles are indicated as being for 19000; any pages applicable specifically to only one body style or the other are so identified (19437 or 19467). I don't know if this model designation also continued in the 72 AIM, but I would bet that it might have.

            The body model designations 37 for coupe and 67 for convertible started at least as early as 1960 in the VIN, maybe earlier internally (?). The 19000 body model identification started in the VIN in 65.

            A really interesting fact is that, after all this time, the body model for the C6 convertible continues as 67 to this day...the coupe body model is now 07 I believe.

              Even More...

              With no convertibles from 77 through 85, the embedding of the body model designations 37 and 67 in the VIN ended.

              When the convertible model came back in 86, embedding of body model designation in the VIN resumed, but only temporarily. For 86, the present day body model designations, 07 for coupe and 67 for coupe were used. Then, in 87, internal body models were no longer used in the VIN...the VINs went to the current embedded designation of 2 (coupe) and 3 (convertible) in the sixth character of the VIN. Probably a DOT thing for all VINS.

                Chuck -

                The "37" for coupes and "67" for convertibles are carry-overs from the Fisher Body standard style identification numbers used for decades for steel bodies, and the "07" was the Fisher I.D. for a "hatchback" coupe (as opposed to a "37" coupe with a regular trunk).

                  Hmmm...Interesting. Looks like they used 87 for the hatch back coupes from 78 to 82...they first used the 07 hatch back coupe model designation in 84. Did Fisher have a standard body style for 87?

                  You know it's a boring day on the Tech Board when we're discussing VIN derivations...sort of like watching C-Span.

                    Chevrolet's description for the 07 model was: Cpe 2 Dr Plain Back

                      Chuck, Actually for 78, 79, and 80 the 07 model was called: Coupe 2 Dr Hardtop. The 07 name designation was changed in 1981 to Coupe 2 Dr Plainback Special and stayed that name until 1986. From 1987 to present the entire system was changed and they are useing single digit desiginations.

                        19467YSN00001;
                        where 37=coupe, 67=convertible, Y=single year digit, N=1 or 4.

                        72-77 Corvette VIN Format:

                        78 Corvette VIN Format:

                        79 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1Z87A9S400001; where 87=two door hardtop(?), A=4 or 8 (engine code).

                        80 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1Z87AAS400001; where 87=two door hardtop(?), A=6, 8 or H (engine code).

                        81-82 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1G1AYNN6NBS400001 (St. Louis), or
                        1G1AYNN6NB5100001 (Bowling Green);
                        where NN= 87 (two door hardtop(?)) or 07 (Collector Edition), N=0-9 check digit.

                        84 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1G1AY078NE5100001
                        where 07= hatch back coupe, N=0-9 check digit.

                        85-86 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1G1YY078NF5100001,
                        1G1YY678NF5100001;
                        where 07= hatch back coupe, 67=convertible, N=0-9 check digit.

                        87-90+ Corvette VIN Format:
                        1G1YY218NA5100001,
                        1G1YY318NA5100001;
                        where 2= two door coupe, 3=convertible, N=0-9 check digit, A = J (87), K (88), L (89)...

                        ...

                        2006 Corvette VIN Format:
                        1G1YY26UN65100001,
                        1G1YY36UN65100001;
                        where 2= two door coupe, 3=convertible, N=0-9 check digit.

                        I don't know what the rest of Chevrolet is currently using for body model codes, but the Bowling Green Plant continues use 07 for two door hatch back coupe, and 67 for convertibles...I think the Z06 is 01, but I could be wrong about that one. The build sheet for my 2006 convertible shows 67 under "model".

                          Correction...

                          Oops...In the 87-90+ Corvette VIN Format: shown above, the tenth character is a letter changing by year, and it should be A = H(87), J(88), K(89), L(90)...

                          There are bound to be other typos. I'm not sure why I wasted a lot of time typing all that out, but it was educational for me.
