    1971 LS5 454 Chrome Valve Covers

I have a friend(also fellow NCRS member-no computer at this time) that has an original(to read "not restamped") 1971 LS5 454 automatic with a/c coupe that appears, or seems to have the original chrome "not restamped" valve covers. Was wondering if it was brought up here before or any members reading this board has one, what was about the latest '71 LS5 VIN that might, could have them( Terry McManmon, you saw this at '98 Fun Display Corvettes@Carlisle) I've seen quotes in Dr. Rebuild, Paragon, Corvette Central anywhere from VIN 3000 to VIN 4000 could have had them. My friend's car is #3322 with a body build date December 7, 1970. Thanks, Paul Borowski

As good as '70-'72 Judging Guides are, we still find new facts as well as errors of ommission/commission. If your NCRS friend believes he has factory original chromed valve covers tell him NOT TO CHANGE THEM. Drive the car and/or show it as is. All too often, we change out good factory original stuff based on knee jerk reaction and later kick ourselves....

There were a few odds/ends on my '71 SB that didn't agree with the JG and I kept 'em (E.g., starter motor). Later found they were right even though it caused some head scratching on the judging field along the way. Bottom line, who's in a big rush to get everything 'right' -- what's 'right' today maybe 'wrong' tomorrow since we're still learning about these cars and the way they were built....

I have also seen references to chrome valve cover gaskets on the 71 LS-5. I have one and they are chrome. Also hace Tonawanda sticker on passenger side cover. NCRS makes no reference to the chrome in their manual.
