I'm new here and already love this place! I have a 1969 390/427 with an aluminum low-rise intake manifold. I thought the specs for this engine were ALL cast iron intake manifolds? part/casting number is 3947801. Just curious..Any ideas or experiences?...thanks and regards...joe

That's the correct casting number and material for your engine. All BB's had aluminum intake manifolds in '69 IIRC.- Top

Yes, as Mike mentions your engine should have exactly the manifold you have. For 1968-69 ALL Corvette big block manifolds were aluminum. However, the 68-69 Corvette manifolds were not used for any other Chevrolet car (except the ZL-1 manifold which was used for the few ZL-1 Camaros built).
The L-36 for 1966-67 used a cast iron manifold and this same manifold was used for other Chevrolet cars with hydraulic lifter big block engines. For 1970-72, the LS-5 (the 454 cid equivalent of the L-36 427) used cast iron manifolds. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Aluminum intake manifold on 1969 L36?
Joe,
According to my NCRS 1953-1972 Corvette Pocket Spec Guide (available thru the NCRS store) the 1969 390 hp 427 cid uses part number 3947801 Aluminum intake manifold. So, it looks like the correct part.

And now a word for our sponsor Membership in the NCRS is a bargain for all the information that is provided for your car, whether it is a "nuts and bolts" perfect restoration, or your favorite ride. The NCRS store provides most of the publications that you would ever need. Besides, where could you meet a greater bunch of car guys???Dick Whittington- Top

Thanks Dick. And now back to our regularly scheduled program which is already in progress, right after another word from our sponsor. Was this one of those politically paid advertisements?- Top

Terry,
Did you think I was actually serious? I hate politics. If I knew how to make those little smiley things, I would have put one at the end of my post. Dick's one of my favorite people on this board.- Top

Re: (Message Deleted by Poster)
thanks to all. I am compiling the manuals I need before I tackle this job and I will get the noted book above. I have an ORIGINAL chevrolet 1970 Chassis Service manual (pub date 1969) that served the 1969 vette. I also have the 1970 orignal overhaul manual, both of which I got from my father when he worked for a dealer as a mechanic. He is planning on working with me on this job! Are ther any other recommneded manulas? I just bought the assembly guide. jt- Top

I won't discuss politics here. Not with any hint of seriousness anyway. I wouldn't have anything nice to say.- Top
