C2 side pipes back to undercar exhaust

I have a 66 originally with undercar exhaust but now with side pipes. What are the chances to go back to the undercar system and avoid significant point deductions? Anyone gone through judging on a similar change over lately? What will be the most likely problem areas and any suggestions on how to minimize deductions? Also, is it practical to try Top Flight with the side pipes on a A.O. Smith car? It looks like a maximum hit of about 30 points for the rockers and 40 for the exhaust.
    thanks.

    Hi Danny,

I went back to undercar on my '66 and when done you should not lose any points if you do it like the factory.

The biggest things to be aware of are if the rocker brackets and front fender tip have been cut off. The fender tips are available and can be put back with not much trouble. If the brackets have been cut that is a bigger job. Hopefully the brackets have just been bent and you can bend them back in place. Rear valence, ground straps etc.. and you should be good to go.

If this is all that's stopping you take it out and get it judged take the hit and see where you stand.

          Danny,

I have an AO Smith 66 and have gone through exactly what you propose. If you leave the side pipes on and get it judged, you will take a big hit. I think it would be more than what you posted because of items such as the rear valance, bezels, etc. When I had my 66 judged with the pipes, I Second Flighted. But, there was a lot more wrong with the car besides just the pipes.

I decided to revert back to under car exhaust and I'm glad I did. I sold the pipes for more than the new Allen's system cost me. Plus, my wife will now ride with me and we can actually hear each other when we talk. Finally, when I had the car judged again (a few weeks ago) it Top Flighted.

With all that said, I agree with Kevin - have the car judged and see how you do. Then you can make a decision on how you want to proceed.

            Build the car for you

not somebody else! If you like it thats all that counts. You can still top Flight losing 80 points. There is 15,000 or so members in NCRS they made 27,720 66 corvettes, you do the math. How many times do you show it. How much do you drive it. Me I rather hear the pipes then the old lady! Phil 8063

Sure, you could remove the side exhausts, but, why would you want to?

phil: if i'd known you'd of rather heard the outside pipes than listening to yer old lady, i'd not have been so hard judging your coupe years ago. regards, mike
