C1 1962 340hp. I just installed a tachometer cable from Corvette Central. It is rather longer than the original. Installed it has a large "S' bend running rear ward from the distributor to the radio then forward to the fire wall then reward to the tachometer. The tachometer works well with a steady reading and is accurate when compared to an electronic tach. The needle is steady and moves smoothly. However, sometimes when I start the engine there is an annoying "ratchety" "coarse whiney" noise. The sound is similar to what would be expected if the cable square end was spinning in the tach drive. But, as said above the tach works fine. The noise does not always occur. I can run the engine several times with no noise. Then on occasion when started the noise occurs. After a couple of miles the noise deminishes, but, continues. Turn the engine off and restart, no noise, or it may reoccur. Any idea wha tis going on? I lightly oiled the inner drive cable prior to installation.

Are you sure you got the right cable? Did you measure it before installing? If memory serves me correctly there isn't much extra length on the right cable. There is a difference in length between a 340hp and a fueler. As for the noise try coating the inner cable with a light grease, oil will end up at the low point of the cable.- Top
