A few months ago, my original speedometer cable tip (nylon) twisted and snapped off at the speedometer head. I installed a new cable with the metal tip into the speedo cable sheath and left it disconnected from the speedo head and it spins fine. Before I connect the cable to the speedometer (and risk more damage to the speedo/cable), I would like to rebuild the speedometer. I figure that the most difficult part will be removing the speedometer/tachometer cluster from the car. Once the speedo is out of the car, I am also considering purchasing and installing a repair kit unit and restoring the original at my leisure. When I do rebuild the speedometer myself, What kind of lubricant should I use in the speedometer head and where can I purchase this type of lube? Are there rebuild kits available for do-it-yourselfers? I welcome your thoughts on the subject! Hopefully I will find what I need at Spring Carlisle.

Re: Speedometer Lube for Rebuild
Tony, I just did this job last week. There isn't much inside the speedo head. The needle is magnetically coupled to the drive from the cable and spring loaded to "O" with a tiny little coiled spring. Then there are two worm drive shafts and a small gear for the odometer drive. If your odometer doen't work it may be because of a worn or stripped worm drive (which is what mine had)probably due to the fact that the trip odometer wheels were locked up. I found a new worm gear in the Dr. Rebuild catalog. If the speedo needle doesn't work and you'll probably need the whole replacement kit which run around $60.
Good Luck, Scott Marzahl- Top
