    Canadian Winter Storage

Am I nuts to think an electric baseboard heater could heat my
insulated double garage? I'm looking to keep it at 50. Thanks Ron

It all depends on size of garage, size of heater and how well it's insulated and sealed.

If your garage is a single and insulated it should keep it above freezing to about -40c based on past experience and that was with an 20yr old baseboard heater.

Why are you worried about the temperature inside your garage? It's more important to have a stable temp than a high temp.

Low temperature and low humidity reduce chemical reaction rates, including corrosion - 20 below (F) and low humidity is an excellent storage environment. Arctic storage is actually a good preservation technique.

The problems come if you get a warm front followed by a cold front. Warm fronts are usually moist, and the following cold front can cause condensation inside the garage. Now you have liquid water.

If you heat the garage, relative humidity goes down and may prevent condensation.

So leave the heater off if it's cold and dry. But if a cold front follows a warm front, turn on the heater and try to keep the garage temperature above the dew point, then ventilate the garage ASAP to get ride of the moist air. These weather patterns usually occur in late winter or spring.

You can buy inexpensive meters to keep track of humidity.

Hi there from montreal. I just bought a triple crown 67, so I'm just as anal as you buddy. My car is in a heated (central with the house) garage. The temperature is constant at 66 degrees, with humidity running around 60%. The key is to avoid big changes in temperature during the winter. Hope this helps...
